Q: How do I figure
out what model is best for me?
A:
There are 3 ways you can choose which is the best air purifier for
your needs. You can shop by manufacturer, application or by
category. Shopping by manufacturer is self explanatory in that
all you have to do is choose the manufacturer to peruse their
catalog of air purifiers. Shopping by application will allow
you to choose the most effective air purifier to address a specific
need; i.e. if you are concerned about asthma, BPA will give you the
best recommendation for this asthma "application". And
finally, you can shop by a more general category; such as a room,
whole house, UV duct and so on air purifier. If you ultimately are
not sure which air purification system is the best for your
particular situation you can always call one of our air purification
specialists toll FREE at 1-877-688-2703.

Technology FAQs:
Q: What is meant
by a "media filter"?
A: Most of the time cotton or synthetic woven fibers (also
known as media fibers), work by the process of trapping airborne
particles. The fibers of these filters trap particles from
the air that is sucked through the air purifier by the whirling fan.
Usually, the higher the efficiency of the fibers (media), the harder
it is to draw the air through the filter.
The tighter and closer the media fibers are woven together, the
smaller the spaces between the media fibers and the smaller the
particle is able to be caught. Media filters become
less effective over time as particles clog the spaces between the
fibers. As a result the air purifier's airflow resistance also
increases, which then decreases the amount of air
being purified. Media air filters must be changed regularly to
maintain their ability to effectively clean the air.

Q:
What is a HEPA filter?
A:
High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters (HEPA) are a type of media
filter that is very tightly woven. This unique filter was initially
developed during World War II to prevent
discharge of airborne radioactive particles from the exhaust of
nuclear reactors. HEPA filters have since become the Gold standard
technology in purifying the air in industrial,
medical, and military settings. HEPA filters are now the most
popular choice for portable residential air cleaners. HEPA devices
have a minimum particle removal efficiency of
99.97% for all particles of 0.3 micron diameter. This rating is
determined using a smoke test challenge that consists of particles
of 0.3 micron average diameter.

Q:
What is electrostatic media?
A:
Electrostatic media is media fibers that can be statically charged.
This special type of media fiber is frequently made of plastic
fibers, these strands produce a static charge as
friction is generated by air passing over and through the fibers.
The airborne particles are caught by the media fibers that trap and
magnetically or statically attract the
particles to the filter media. Electrostatic media is usually
loosely woven giving less resistance to the air flow but is still effective
at trapping the smallest of particles.
Electrostatic media filters must be changed or cleaned regularly to
maintain their ability to clean and purify the air.

Q:
What is an Ion Generator?
A:
Ion generators do not use filters, but function on the theory of
electrostatic attraction. The ion air puifier produces negative ions
from a needle-like point usually located near
the top of the air purifier. The negative ions are then carried by
the indoor air currents, magnetically attaching themselves to
airborne particles. The particles then receive the
negative ion's negative charge and is attracted to positively
charged items such as any surface. Walls and furnishings are
positively charged, so the airborne particles are
attached to these surfaces. Most ion generators can produce a
"black-wall" effect whereby surface areas can get dirty as a result
of the clinging particles.

Q:
What is an Ozone generator?
A:
An ozone generator does not use any filters. These air purifiers
operate by introducing the highly reactive molecule, Ozone (O3) into
the air. The extra oxygen atom of the 03
molecule breaks up air borne pollutants just like the way bleaching
agents are spread through the water when added to the wash water.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding
the use of these ozone air purifiers. Ozone is considered a
hazardous workplace chemical by O.S.H.A. (U.S. Occupational Safety
and Health Administration), and is also considered
an air pollutant that requires regulation by the E.P.A.
(Environmental Protection Agency. Ozone may also be particularly
harmful to people with asthma. It is our experience that
ozone air purifiers do have their place as long as they emit small
amounts of ozone with no irritating by-products such as nitric
oxide.

Q:
What is an electrostatic precipitator?
A:
Electrostatic Precipitators, also known as electronic air cleaners,
operate on electrostatic attraction to a collecting section called a
filter cell. This electrostatic filter
cell provides a charge to the airborne particle that is brought
through the filter cell by ionizing wires that are located in the
front portion of the cell. The collecting plates
are negatively charged oppositely the positively charged airborne
particle sticks to the collecting surfaces. Electrostatic filters
work very well with the smallest of particles.
Electrostatic air cleaners become less efficient at purifying the
air as the collecting cell becomes dirty. The electronic collecting
cell must be cleaned regularly to maintain
maximum efficiency.

Q:
What is the best way to tell if an air purifier is really improving
my Indoor Air Quality?
A:
The Gold standard for scientifically and objectively measuring the
efficiency of an air purifier to reduce the amount of airborne
particles is to measure the pollution level of your indoor air with
a laser particle counter (LPC). The laser particle counter is an
instrument that measures airborne particles floating around in the
air by shining a laser through the air. Particles then block the
laser and prevent it from being detected by the special detectors
whereby a number is then calculated by the LPC to indicate the level
of airborne contaminants.

Indoor Air Quality FAQs
Q: What is Indoor
Air Quality (IAQ) and is it really a problem?
A: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) the nation's worst environmental health
problem, even worse than outdoor air pollution. A significant
increase in asthma and hay fever corresponds to an increased level
of allergens and irritants in our homes and offices as a result of
poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).

Q: What does the Environmental Protection Agency say about
Indoor Air Quality?
A: "the air within homes can be more polluted than outdoor air
in even the largest cities... the risks to health may be greater due
to exposure to air pollution indoors rather than outdoors." EPA
Document #402-K-93-007, April 1995.

Q: Does my home or office have an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
problem?
A: Given the sheer number of potential sources that contribute
to poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), it is very likely that you have a
moderate IAQ problem and not even notice it. Surprisingly, homes or
offices built in the last 20 years, are more likely to have a severe
IAQ problem. In an effort to increase energy efficiency in our
houses and buildings, engineers and builders have sealed the "leaks"
that allowed the constant mixing of cleaner outdoor air with our
indoor air.

Q: What common contaminants contribute to poor Indoor Air
Quality (IAQ)?
A: Household cleansers, laundry detergents, air fresheners,
aerosols, insecticides, insects, pet hair, dander, contents from
litter boxes, cigarette smoke, food, dust (dust mites), people (dead
skin, hair, perfume, etc.), carpet, construction materials, just to
name a few.

Health Related FAQs:
Q: What is the
best air purifier to use for someone who has asthma and will an air
purifier cure my asthma?
A: The best air purifier we have found, hands down, that
reduces the most symptoms people experience with asthma is the
IQair HealthPro or the
IQair HealthProPlus.
BPA would like to stress that none of our products, including any
air purifier is used to diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any
disease. To say it does would be irresponsible and, to be quite
frank would get us in a world of trouble because it is illegal to
say such a statement. With that understanding, there are air
purifiers that are under going independent, double blind placebo
controlled medical studies with various health conditions such as
asthma... and the results are very positive. IQair is leading
the way in this medical research with superior results.

Q: I don't have
any health problems that I know of, would it still be beneficial for
me to clean my air using an air purifier?
A: A team of Southern California researchers have discovered
that microscopic airborne particles can disrupt the inner mechanics
of cells, offering a possible explanation of how air pollutants can
harm the human body.
The new study, led by scientists at UCLA and USC, links the tiniest
particles found in dust and smoke to injuries. The particles are so
small -- about 1,000 could fit inside the period at the end of this
sentence -- that they easily bypass the body's defense mechanisms.
The findings also are the first to show that very tiny particles
travel beyond the lungs and bloodstream to penetrate deep inside
cells. The pollutant accumulates within a critical component that
powers the cell and maintains its function. Damage to that cellular
component is known to lead to an assortment of diseases. It is
our opinion based upon scientific fact that improving your indoor
air quality, no matter what your state of health through the use of
a high quality air purifier is a wise and sound decisions.
