"...Airpura Standard Residential Model R600
provides general background ambient air cleaning suitable for homes, offices
and workshops..."
The Airpura Standard, otherwise known as the
model number R-600, is a great solution to improve your general level of
indoor air quality. Within the last several decades, building
construction has strived to be air tight. Everything has been sealed:
windows, doors, even plastic insulation that seals the whole exterior. Even though keeping the same indoor air circulating saves heating and
cooling costs, it also forces us to fester in our own environment. Imagine a swimming pool with no filters or water treatment where the same
water constantly re-circulates, getting dirtier and dirtier. Before
long it will look like a dirty bathtub.
HEPA and Activated Carbon...
Indoor air generally contains dust mites,
pollen, mold spores, skin cells, moisture droplets, and sometimes pet
dander, or asbestos. These are particles which can become permanently
lodged in lung tissue. HEPA filtration will remove these particles. Poor quality indoor air
also contains
common chemicals such as formaldehyde, ammonia, benzene, radon, glues,
pesticides, methylene chloride, mold mycotoxins, and perchloroethylene.
Chemicals like these are removed from the air by a process known as
adsorption. Basically, the gaseous chemicals blow through a bed of
carbon ground into little pellets. The gaseous chemical molecules
stick to the carbon creating a film on the surface the pellets. Ground
up carbon is used because it has more surface area for molecules to stick.
Activated carbon is most often used to adsorb gases because its surface is
made of tiny micro-pores that give it a huge surface area. One gram of
granulated carbon has the surface area of two tennis courts.

Applications...
The
Airpura Standard provides thorough
purification of indoor breathing air for rooms up to 2000 square feet with a
standard 8 foot ceiling in homes, offices or workshops. The Airpura
standard will treat common particles and gaseous chemicals that cause
allergies, asthma, dry throats, wheezing, coughing, runny nose, eye
irritations, nausea, loss of coordination, cancers, liver damage, kidney and
central nervous system.

True HEPA
is a media filter that has been laboratory tested to prevent passage of
99.97% of all particles 0.3 micrometers or larger. HEPA stands for
"high efficiency particulate air" filter.
Media filters can be
laboratory tested in a variety of ways, but to be classified as HEPA, they
must pass the United States Department of Energy Standard 3020-97,
Specification for HEPA filters used by DOE contractors.
Activated Carbon
or activated charcoal, has exceptionally high surface area and molecular
adsorbing qualities. Besides air purification, it is also used for
home water purification, medicine, wastewater treatment, gas masks,
automobile emissions control and more. Activated carbon has a surface
area from 500m²/g - 1000m²/g. A
tennis court has 260m². So one gram of carbon has about the same
surface area of two tennis courts.
