A dehumidifier uses a fan that constantly draws room air and over the pair coils. Moisture from the air is cooled over the first set of coils and condenses Much like a cold glass of water that sweats on a hot day. The water drips into a reservoir or through a hose to a drain.

The other coil warms the air, which is blown back out. Although a dehumidifier does not cool the air, it makes it more comfortable because it decreases the humidity removing that sticky feeling and must smell. A dehumidifier does not function well under about 65 degrees.
